Study on Spatial Differentiation of  Residents’ Domestic Tourism: A Case Study of Shanghai City

Abstract

Taking Shanghai resident’s tourism as a case, the paper utilizes the combination of normative analysis and case analysis to reveal the spatial differentiation of residents’ domestic travel. The research concludes that: (1) According to the “distance-quantity-market” model, on certain assumptions, the residents’ travel is generally based on the patterns and characteristics of different spatial circles. There are three concentric circles of travel centered on the city tourist market, which are short range travel circle, medium range travel circle and long range travel circle, the distance span of different circles is determined by the composition of market segments. (2) By the influences of travel time, economic capability, transportation modes, travel preferences, as well as the otherness between destinations and tourism resources around Shanghai, there are three travel distance layers of Shanghai residents, which are the short-range sightseeing and leisure travel circle with the travel distance within 300 km, the medium-range sightseeing and vacation travel circle with the distance between 301 km to 3 000 km and the long-range natural and cultural exploration travel circle with the distance more than 3 000 km.
